The aorta branches into left and right iliac arteries as they descend the legs. Various branches of the iliac arteries extend to the abdomen, pelvic and groin areas. As the blood moves down the leg, blood moves to the upper limbs through the network that enables the supply of the blood and is known as the femoral artery. The femoral artery supplies the blood to the thigh and skin, therefore, allowing the blood to enter the posterior of the knee forming the popliteal artery which has several tissues that provide blood in the upper leg regions as most blood proceeds to lower legs. Once the oxygen is supplied to the muscles, the blood-rich in carbon dioxide leaves lower leg via and flows back to the heart via the right atrium through the vena cava (Innerbody).
