COMMUNICATION FOR HEALTH PROFESSIONALS
Document Type:Case Study
Subject Area:Nursing
Any individual traumatized by a shocking event like in the case of Katherine requires a special model of communication. Moreover, good communication skills have to apply in order to facilitate positive change (Nadal et al, 2014). This essay tackles the scenario of Katherine, who needs counseling since she has been left traumatized by a fire event that occurred in her friend's kitchen. She now has a phobia for stoves, always scared that they might cause a fire after use or if left uncleansed. The aim of this essay is to explore the whole communication process with Katherine, detailing key factors like rapport, applied communication strategies. This enhances her openness, level of confidence and flexibility of details (Nadal et al, 2014). Eye contact with the client is also important as it shows the interest level of the counselor.
It shows that one is keen to listen and understand. This is however flexible according to the culture at hand. Making facial expressions that show you are curious to know more, and appropriate reactions to the situation also help. Developing rapport with the client A great counselor needs to build rapport to establish trust with new clients and allow communication to flow freely. According to Leanne Hall, a clinical psychologist and counselling expert, building rapport should be done effectively while respecting personal boundaries. There are several ways which I would use to build rapport with Katherine. These include being prepared, listening without judgment, and use disclosure with caution which means maintaining professional boundaries (Weatherford, Brooks and Allfred, 2016). I would also be aware of her limitations in knowledge and experience and use of empathy which would be useful to build a meaningful connection The appropriate model of communication to the client For effective counselling, the appropriate model here would be the transactional communication model.
Often, she would stare outside while we talk, forcing the conversation to slow down. I had to overturn the wall pictures and move certain artistic features in the office. I also kept the window closed, while also drawing the curtain. This helped stop the distractions. b) Differences in social and cultural background Katherine, being an indigenous woman, 25 years old, had her own perceptions about life experiences. Sympathetic listening also becomes a barrier to effective communication as employing sympathy. limits helping out in the relationship and interaction as it distorts the counselor’s listening to the client’s story. Ethical considerations The counselor has an obligation to encourage the client to think independently and make decisions on their own. Ethical issues in counseling include topics such as dual relationships by creating a boundary of respect between work with the clients and the outside work issues, confidentiality, development, and use of disclosure statements.
The counselor should be willing to reveal to the client any risks and issues involved when in the work environment and how to work towards attaining the client’s anticipated outcomes and consent rights which can be done through working with care and ethics according to the law, multicultural counseling and professional competitiveness. The guidance and counselling tutor, Mr. Charles Houston assisted me with key points to consider when dealing with patients suffering from trauma and anxiety. Mr. Charles had handled several cases from the local community and was familiar with this case, hence contributed to the overall success of counselling. Katherine’s workmate was able to disclose to me the kind of relationship Katherine had with her workmates, basing on her interaction level. The counselor should demonstrate integrity at all times and build an appropriate professional relationship with the client.
Based on this essay, Katherine was able to find help and retaliate from her previous reactions of trauma to fire and stoves. She now has a more realistic approach to the situation due to the success of the approach and effective communication skills of my counseling session. References Carson-Wong, A. Hughes, C.
