Many people cannot differentiate between what a school means and how it is different from academies. Although academy and school mean different things in different places, this article will explain the widely accepted meaning of schools and academies and compare it with what it is called in certain countries. What is A School A school is a place where students receive formal education from their teachers. That is, children go to school during their formative years of age 2 upwards to receive formal education from a signature curriculum implemented by all schools in the country. These schools have different names in different countries. They were founded in 2000 by a labor government initiative led by the British PM, Tony Blair. They have the same functions as regular schools, albeit, with a few structural tweaks.

While schools are funded locally in Britain, Academies are central government or state-funded. They are an independent body that gets funds from the Education Funding Agency (EFA). Unlike schools, academies have better flexibility, they can modify the national curriculum to meet their specifics. Secondary Schools in the UK has a 2-year GSCE period between the age of 14-16. After completion, they can move on to tertiary institutions and universities.
