What I personally feel about this issue is contradictory, though. The existing Variola virus should not be destroyed completely. From time immemorial, disease-causing pathogens have always had the tendency of remaining dormant for many years during which they mutate and reemerge much later on in different forms and thus with the potential of causing newer diseases. Research for new pathogens and healing mechanisms for existing human ailments is a continuance issue rather than a momentary milestone (Weinstein 681). For this reason, retaining the smallpox stocks by the world health organization is more beneficial than detrimental. The complete eradication of the disease in 1980 placed human beings out of harm’s way (Hammond 774). All that now remains is an enormous amount of research, based on the live Variola virus stocks at the WHO, with the aim of forestalling the reemergence of mutated forms of smallpox in the foreseeable future.
