At the time, he was a major general serving in 5 Gorkha rifles (Jacob, 7). While in war with Pakistan, Cardozo stepped on a landmine which resulted to bad leg injury. Neither morphine nor pethidine were available. There were also no medics to amputate his leg in a surgical way. His fellow soldiers could not do it either due to the risks involved. He was later promoted to command a Gurkha Battalion and a brigade. According to Cardozo (21), this passion had also been demonstrated by joining the Joint services wing at clement town after he was done with his college. He belonged to the school of thought that believes that one’s job must be done in the best way despite the challenges faced.
