In the former, one or more skilled health professionals restrain the patient through a hand on method, while in the mechanical restraint, there is use of authorized equipment so that patient body parts movement is safely restricted or immobilized. On the other hand the mechanical restrain can be initiated when the patient is undergoing sustained self mutilation of which if no urgent intervention is given there are possibilities of serious harm (Stewart, Van der Merwe, Bowers, Simpson & Jones, 2010). Upon administration of a patient indicated for physical restraint, a management plan is usually developed. This plan is arrived at by a multidiscipline healthcare team. Key considerations in this plan are physical care, psychological and communication. Under physical care upon mobilization, patient air way is checked, skin color to detect any cyanosis, check for bleeding and any form of physical injury or discomfort. Under psychological care one assesses the general alertness and response of various physical restraint events. Communication is vital among the staff and between the healthcare provider and the patient; this enables the patient to appreciate all the procedures being performed.
