Another harmful influence is illegal drugs. These harmful drugs such as cocaine and heroin increase the risks for pre-mature births, physical and mental deformities and well as death of the infants at birth. Some of these infants are born already addicted to the drugs. It also produces at risk children whose capacity for success is reduced due to the incapability of their parents to provide a healthy and wholesome environment. Tobacco is a common drug that jeopardizes the health of the child in the womb. Most of these pollutants such as mercury and PCBs affect the development of the babies in the womb as well as cause long-term physical and brain defects. Lastly one significant environmental factor that has dire impacts is infectious diseases especially in Africa and Asia where most mothers lack resources to access necessary health amenities.
