Afonso sometimes goes by the title Apostle of Kongo owing to his pioneering works while initiating Christianity in the Kongo Kingdom. There is limited information available on Afonso's early life, and much of what is available is through his elaborations in a sequence of letters he wrote to kings and government workers in Lisbon and Rome. Afonso was the son of King Nzinga a Nkuwu who converted to Christianity shortly after the Portuguese arrived at his territory in 1483. King Nzinga received his baptism in May 1491. A vast majority of his followers followed this trend. Owing to this initiation, many people from Kongo changed their names to Portuguese variations. The nobles, who converted into Christian Catholic, did so because the King changed religions.

Similarities In Christian Catholicism in both the Kongo and the Americas, conversion to Christian Catholicism involves a voluntary submission to Catholic teachings. In both cases, also baptism was an initiatory exercise that symbolized purification or regeneration thus admission to Christianity. Differences The Christianity practiced in the Kongo Kingdom did not eradicate the old forms of traditional worship and largely, Christianity here was a continuation of the Kong religion. The bible was an essential book that provided religious guidance. It was the Bishop's responsibility to administer teachings to the believers. Explain the Portuguese Connection and how this compares with Columbus' journey The Portuguese arrived in Central Africa on the mouth of the Congo River. The Congo River was the center of the Kongo Kingdom.

To instigate a relationship, they exchanged goods and services. The arrival of the Portuguese set tone for slavery, the slave trade, and colonization in Africa. This bears resemblance as the arrival of Columbus who instigated centuries of colonialism on the American continent. Explain why this topic is not covered as much as the Colonization of Americas It is important to note that Columbus and his crew were not the first Europeans to discover the Americas; they generated a great deal of publicity that instigated the colonization of America by the European powers. However, the story of Columbus was shrouded by the amount of violence that took place on the continent. This is primarily the reason why the topic of Columbus has not been covered as much as the Colonization of Americas.
