His quick thoughts enabled him to undertake his operations with ease and at a fast pace. He would go to the hall when the soldiers were drunk, some of them asleep and since they would be deep in their dreams and suspecting nothing. Then in the silence, Grendel would snatch a number of the men and run away with their bodies. His actions were dreadful and the village kingdom was always scared of when next he would visit again. Then there came Beowulf, a follower of Higlac and the strongest man among the Geats who had traveled from across the sea to help Hrothgar to deal with Grendel. He grabbed the first soldier, killed him using his strong claws and drunk of his blood.

He then proceeded to the next person, this time it was Beowulf, with his strong grasp but his claws bent back due to the strength he had. It was the first time that Grendel had faced such a strong man with hands harder than his. He tried his best but it seemed that nothing would make him get off from the grip of Beowulf. Grendel was horrified and in his mind he had only one thought, to escape from Beowulf and run away to hide in his marsh but Beowulf would not let him out of his sight. The victory was theirs. The war against Grendel was over and Beowulf was praised for keeping his promise to clear the bloody monster.
