Thus, approximately more than 30 percent of the Hong Kong population is sheltering in subsidized housing while the number of individuals waiting to be enrolled keeps increasing each day. The rising prices in relation to property in Hong Kong demonstrate to be a real problem, especially among families that live on low-income salaries and those unemployed. This seems to be among the leading issues affecting the ability of the poor in Hong Kong to own a good place to shelter. With regards to this problem, this research will critically explore the problem of housing in Hong Kong with an attempt to understand how lack of land supply and other factors such as the increasing population, unemployment, and poverty influence this problem. Lastly, the paper will present some of the solutions that the government can apply in an attempt to solve the housing issues in the long-term.

Thus, the fact that the governments control land in Hong Kong, It means that it limits the supply of land in connection to the specified reasons that can help it double its income in real estate. It is almost impossible for a citizen in Hong Kong to own land, considering the huge expenses involved and the fact that one has to pass through the government to complete this process. Land demand and housing are among the two things that are regulated in Hong Kong, regardless of the need people have towards these resources. Hong Kong society at large is suffering from cases of multi-faced issues with cramped, pricy, tiny living conditions that demonstrate soaring property rents and prices. This makes it challenging for most people in Hong Kong to buy their first home and also other issues related to the overcrowded lifestyle.

This has forced the city to shift to the construction of business centers and high apartments in an attempt to accommodate this population. Hence, this phase of population growth in the city of Hong Kong has led to congestion, especially in residential places. This has triggered the rise in the price of housing in this city causing serious inadequacies among low-income residences. The result of this issue is the reported increase in subdivided flats in Hong Kong following the inability to afford standard housing among low-income earners, cases of poor supply of public based housing units and the limited access to residential construction (Dwan, Sawicki, and Wong, 2013). Poverty as a result of low-income or unemployment is yet another factor contributing to cases of the housing problem in Hong Kong.

Although the problem of housing is closely linked to limited land supply, other factors such as unemployment play part since most people who are unemployed cannot be able to support their lives including basing living needs such as shelter. This paint an image that Hong Kong is among the most expensive cities to operate in considering the fact that housing demands a lot of bills. According to Task Force research, Hong Kong is ranked as the least city to purchase a home following its standard of living and price of rent and property. What can the government and policymakers do to combat this growing problem in Hong Kong? Solutions to Housing Problem in Hong Kong There is no easy way to fix the housing issue in Hong Kong, hence the city needs to adapt to strategic approaches to fix this issue in the long-term.

This is because the pressure that comes with the housing problem in this city keeps growing than ever and thus, demanding for immediate solutions to avoid this issue in the future. Applied in New York City this approach offers permanent support in housing issues with a cost-effective budget. This is a supportive program that involves the utilization of affordable housing support model with vital support help for individuals that are unable to work and support themselves or their family due to various illness such as HIV/AIDS and mental illness or other serious medical issues. The establishment of permanent supportive housing for individuals with various medical complications and those struggling with low-income according to research on this issue prove to be more effective than having these people in institutional and emergency care (CBO, 2018).

Hence, the government can use “housing first” approach to relocate such individuals to subsidized houses that are privately owned and then connecting them to various support services to help them recover and return to their normal working life. The beneficial aspect of this program is considering the fact that it is less costly than correctional centers and hospitals. The fact the labor is hard to come by, especially for individuals with limited skills calls for the government to introduce effective programs to prepare young adults for the labor market in order to be able to support their needs. With education, it is easy for some of these individuals to not only support themselves but also those close to them with housing issues.

This is a win-win situation as the government gets to benefit from the contribution of such individuals to the labor market and at the same time helping the youth shape their future in the right way. Regardless of the fact that the government can help in supporting individuals suffering from housing issues such as those with mental illness, there is still will be a group of people that need a good place to live. Thus, the government can turn various old and abandoned properties such as hotels to a home facility to gives such people a place to shelter while organizing their life (Paulsen, 2007).
