Life was not easy for Jewish people in Tsarist Russia. Anti-Semitic sentiments were rampant and going to the University was never guaranteed. There existed lottery system and a maximum quota of 3% Jewish students put the odds against Vygotsky, but he was lucky. Vygotsky attended both Moscow State University and Shanyavsky University and earned a law degree at the former and a humanities degree at the latter. There was the October Revolution of 1917 that caused social and cultural upheaval in Russia, and one of the effects was millions of orphaned and homeless children. Vygotskyean philosophy of education focused on four fundamental principles: 1. Development is a result of learning. Language plays a center role in mental development 3. Development and its social context is inseparable 4.
