The program was aired on CBS. Subsequently, a tv series version was made. Upon completion, the movie version of Gunsmoke was released. The Gunsmoke series was set in Dodge City, Kansas, in the 1890s. Its characters include Marshall Matt Dillon, played by James Arness, Doc Adams, played by Milburn Stone, Deputy Marshall Chester Goode, played by Dennis Weaver, Miss Kitty Russel, played by Amanda Blake, amongst others. During both the TV and Radio versions, Sheriff Matt Dillon flanked with his friends, including Doc Adams, the town physician, Chester, Matt's assistant, and Kitty, a saloon girl. Matt Dillon always led a carefree life to talk with Chester or at a bar with Kitty. However, issues arising in the town were always taken to Marshall Matt Dillon.

Dillon was known for his good eye for justice, independence, and fairness. So, he judged situations fairly in Dodge city, which stamped his name as the old west hero. Dodge City was known for everyday crime, killings, and banditry in the late 19th century, and Marshall Wyatt was tasked to maintain peace in the place. The fictional character of Marshall Dillon was shaped after Wyatt Earp. Gunsmoke Radio and TV Series The Gunsmoke Radio series featured between April 26, 1952, and June 18, 1961. Williams Conrad played Matt Dillon. Gunsmoke featured nine series and 480 episodes. While Amanda Blake replaced George Ellis (Kitty Russel) in TV, Milburn Stone replaced Howard McNear (Doc Adams), and Dennis Weaver replaced Parley Baer (Marshall Chester). Other characters in the TV series include Ken Curtis, Buck Taylor, Rex Koury, Glenn Spencer, Roger Ewing, etc.
