government took extreme measures with the aim to maintain the stability of the country. The fundamental principle of democracy is to respect individual rights. Thus, they should not be prohibited to exercise their liberties unless when impending danger to national stability and security is certainly out of control. The reasons offered by the United States government in the Espionage and Seditions Act was necessary at it prohibited giving aid to the enemy by spying. 1 The argument for national security was reasonable as it sought to convince American citizens to do anything within their power to ensure America won the World War I. 5 Even though the U. S. Supreme Court held that the government could not stop the publication of articles, Pentagon Papers revealed the naked truth of the Vietnam War to an increasingly disapproving and dissatisfied public.
