Steroid use has recently begun to be on the forefront in professional sports, although it has been there for a while. In 2004, drug testing was included in the State of Union address by President Bush. He called for an increase in the fight against the use of steroids by the players among professional sports leagues Due to the slow pace of implementation of the changes to the drug testing policies by the professional leagues, there was a need for the Congress to call to action itself. In 2005, multiple bills were introduced by the Congress to regulate the same.

It is the nature of the CBA to take a significant amount of effort and time. Therefore, any sort of compromise in Drug testing policies cannot be easily attained. Once realized to have used drugs, the athlete faces the consequences ranging from seasonal suspensions, salary loss, loss of endorsement deals and even end of jobs. II. STEROID TESTING POLICIES OF PROFESSIONAL SPORTS LEAGUES 1. During the 2003 season, there was a need by the CBA to conduct a survey testing on the players. According to the survey, there was no punishment for positive tests but if more than 5% tested positive, then mandatory testing in the next seasons was to be implemented until the percentage reduced to 2%. One thousand and forty-three players were tested, and around 6% tested positive.

Mandatory testing was thus implemented in the 2004 season whereby positive subjects were subjected to further testing and treatment (Shun Assel & Peter Keating, 2005). A tougher policy was however employed in the 2005 season. According to this paper, there exist a couple of opinions that support the arduous scrutiny. One of the reasons is the bodily harm supposed to be caused by most of these drugs. This is a true and strong opinion according to anyone including a prisoner.
