Old Egyptian Architecture The Temple of Dendur
Document Type:Essay
Subject Area:Architecture
You are now wondering how I saw an Egyptian Temple in New York? The temple was built in South Egypt’s Nubia region in the West bank of Nile in 10 BCE. However, in 1960 when the Aswan high dam was being constructed, the temple would be submerged in water. With America funding a great deal of the project Aswan, the then Egyptian government rewarded America by giving her the temple amid a campaign by UNESCO to preserve ancient Nubian culture. The temple of Dendur would be dismantled, blocks packed, shipped and later erected in the Met region of New York where I saw it. Entering the temple from the front, one sees a magnificent building all commanding power. Then at the top is a cavetto cornice.
