Due to the increased rate of psychiatric disorders, psychiatrists have expanded their knowledge on the study of mental illnesses by focusing on broader areas to understand the cause of psychiatric disorders on their patients. Typically, genetic counseling has proven to be effective in reducing shame and stigma among the family members, when a member of their family has been diagnosed with a mental disorder. Therefore, genetic counseling is essential in assessing risks in mental health. If so, should genetic counseling focus only on severe psychiatric illnesses like bipolar disorder and schizophrenia or should all mental health disorders be considered? According to Pestka, genetic counseling should focus on all psychiatric disorders regardless of their level of severity (1-7).
