For a perfect illustration of this social phenomenon, I will use examples from the film Mean Girls. The film depicts Cady Heron who has just relocated to a new country. She struggles to fit in the new school. The functionalist perspective asserts that all individuals in the society serve a role that contributes to the overall functioning of the society. People have specific roles, which when working collectively, form a society, and allow the existence of inequality between persons. Conflict theory, which was proposed by Karl Max, states that power and domination maintain social order as opposed to conformity or consensus (Mouzelis, 49). Regina George is one character who is extremely powerful both in her clique and the entire school. She has control over almost everything ranging from what the plastics wear, and whom they can date.
