Substance Use and Co Occurring Disorder
Document Type:Essay
Subject Area:Social Work
SAMHSA established in 2014 that about 7. 9 million adults in the United States had co-occurring disorders ("Co-occurring Disorders | SAMHSA - Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration," 2016). Co-occurring disorders have complicated symptoms that differ in severity—an aspect that makes the diagnosis of these disorders difficult. Therefore, people with the co-occurring disorders can undergo management processes or recovery programs through integrated treatment (Morgen, 2017). The prime reason for the use of integrated treatment is to ensure that the counselors address the substance use and mental disorder concurrently, which is cost effective and gives improved results. The process of diagnosis needs a collection of symptoms affecting the professional and social life of the patient, which is unlike alcohol use disorder that requires direct and straightforward medical tests.
