However, these arguments are not valid, and the promise to “feed the world” using GM foods overlooks the actual factors that cause hunger and disregards a lot of effects associated with this technology. The argument that the world needs GM crops to fight against food insecurity because of the increased population does not consider the real roots of the problem that hunger is as a result of poverty and inequality. Most of the people are not hungry because of insufficient yields in agriculture but because they are not in a position to buy food. Others cannot afford fertile land to cultivate or due to some complex challenges such as spoilage of food, inadequate systems of food distribution and poor infrastructure for irrigating their lands, financing, and storage.

If such problems are not properly addressed, and so long as poor people have no proper access to food, food insecurity in the world will never be addressed by increasing agricultural production (GMO Inquiry, 2015). Another barrier is the emerging shortage funds for research in agrobiodiversity remedies as compared to research financing in genetic structuring of plants. Favouring of biodiversity does not exempt future contributions in biotechnology, but biotechnology favoritism serves as a threat to resources of future biodiversity. The objective view of present research does not recognize GM technology as potential solution for addressing food insecurity in the world (Jacobsen, Sørensen, Pedersen & Weiner, 2013). Therefore, it is advisable to spend the research funds set aside for its development in other fields of research, such as plant science if the objective is to produce enough food for feeding increasing number of people in a sustainable way.
