The benefits of paper records vs paperless records

Studying health information science has enabled me garner a lot of knowledge as well as first-hand experience on why it is past time hospitals moved to electronic records and abandoned paper records. While paper records have their merits electronic methods are advantageous in there cost-effectiveness, public relations, security and accuracy. The very first and very obvious reason for switching is that Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) are cost-effective. A projection by the center for information technology leadership shows that about $44 billion would be saved annually by switching to EMRs (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, & And Medicine (U. S. EMRs would limit access only to practitioners with authority thus securing the patient’s medical privacy is observed. Medical privacy as stipulated by the constitution would not have a better chance of being ensured without EMRs (Howarth, Bown, & Whitehouse, 2013, p.

Just to illustrate how secure EMRs are over paper records, it would be worth noting that paper records are at a higher risk of getting lost due to various factors such as break-ins, errors and physical damage. Besides keeping only one copy of a paper record leaves the facility at risk of losing vital patient records. EMRs however can be backed up and using cloud technology, data kept on EMRs is virtually incapable of getting lost. EMRs are the future and we should not be afraid to embrace the future.
