What societal factors can influence gang violence
Document Type:Article
Subject Area:Criminology
Given that much of the violence results from gang rivalry in the United States, Tita and Ridgeway argue that the sort of crime carried out largely depend on the criminal activities’ location. Gangs make use of the space within their area to carry out various gang-related activities. Typically, the drug dealing activities of a gang take place within its turf; however, violent crimes like burglaries and robberies usually occur in areas outside the home territory. Despite this, violence is still likely to erupt within the turf, mainly if it is dominated by more than one gang, as behaviors that involved physical force is considered as a tool of establishing and protecting such locations. Due to such a close association with violence, such drug markets can be regarded as responsible for not only the crime levels but the general degeneration of inner cities.
