Also, the war saw the rapid decline of the European colonial empires. The USSR and United States, who were once allies at the time of Second World War, now become economic and military competitors. The two nations engaged in and were on the world stage during the Cold War. The period is so referred to as the Cold War because it did not result in any war between the two superpowers. It is similar to but slightly different from the League of Nations. The member countries of the organization entered into an agreement outlawing aggression war. The deal was introduced into in a bid to try and avoid possible world war in the future.

The devastated and frustrated nations of Western Europe established the European Steel and Coal Community. The organization would later be reestablished as the Economic European Community, which is today known as the European Union. The American government was also highly concerned with the authoritarian leadership of Joseph Stalin, who was described as a blood-thirsty and tyrannical ruler. On the other hand, the Soviet Union was actively resenting The United States' failure to recognize the country as a part of the global community. Following the end of the war, the grievances between the two nations widened into a sense of mutual enmity and distrust (Scott 2014). Second World War Situation Moreover, the Soviet Union resented what they regarded as the United States' arms buildup, interventionist approach and aggressive rhetoric approach to global relations.

When the Second World War ended, the United States government resolved that the most effective defense against threats of the Soviet Union was the containment strategy. The USSR and United States, who were once allies at the time of Second World War, now become economic and military competitors. The two nations engaged in and were on the world stage during the Cold War. The period is so referred to as the Cold War because it did not result in any war between the two superpowers. Instead, it was primarily characterized by political subversion, espionage and proxy war (Cox 2012). Further, the Western European countries were re-established through the Marshall Plan – a strategic economic plan that was devised by the federal government to stabilize the damaged countries by WWII.

The Union was formed as an attempt to prevent another waging war between France and Germany through economic integration and cooperation and establishing a common market for exploitation of natural resources (Anderson 2015). America as a superpower Even though the United States was automatically declared one of the two most political and military powers following the World War II, was not interested in colonizing any country with exceptions of US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

A large number of individuals attending higher institutions of learning led in a massive amount of the American populations willing and being informed of the present economic and social inequalities in society. Consequently, Americans were now preoccupied with addressing and advocating for social injustices and ensuring improved the government bureaucracy and infrastructure (LaFeber 2017). The social justice advocates were determined to a better government that served all despite their religious, race or economic background (Mann 2013). These common progressions were able to bring to the light the oppressive government actions and hence address them systematically. However, while the middle economic class was multiplying, poverty was becoming prevalent in some parts of the country, both rural and urban areas. Significant shifts in the global systems accompanied the culmination of the Cold War.
