We chose to conduct a project on constructing a building to enable the University to provide an exceptional environment for the teaching members and the students. Types of Projects Our project falls under the project type of construction. The University of Leeds wants to construct an additional building to facilitate the process of knowledge acquisition at the facility. The building will offer staff members, faculty members, and students an enhanced ability in their pursuit of knowledge at the higher learning institution. The building will be constructed in a 2,000 square meter area that will include 30 rooms divided into teaching classes, a café, and a financial lab, 9 toilets, an outdoor parking area, and an outdoor area. The project will aim at meeting the expectations of all stakeholders regarding the quality of the building, the budgetary allocation, and the scheduled timeline.

As defined by Duy Nguyen et al. (2004, p. 407) milestones in projects are significant events that occur during the course of a project. The timing of these events can influence the scheduling of other project activities. Our work breakdown structure presents a plan that breaks the project team’s work into manageable sections. The WBS for the project of constructing a teaching building start with the project and break it down into smaller, manageable activities and tasks that project team members can reasonably assign to teams and evaluate their progress. Other than the work breakdown structure, out project also applies the Gantt chart and Network Diagrams as project management tools to the effective completion of the construction project. An effective budget management is the driving force in successfully executing a construction project (Kelly et al. 21), project management is the process of managing, organizing, and planning tasks and allocating resources to achieve defined objectives and goals, usually with constraints on cost and time. Most projects, whether simple and small or complex and large, can be planned by breaking down the project into small, easily manageable activities and tasks, scheduling the tasks and activities and then tracking the tasks and activities as the project progresses. In this context, this part of the report presents a breakdown of the building construction project into activities and presents a discussion of the construction activity scheduling and the tracking of progress. Given the size and complexity of a construction project, a construction project manager needs to possess a broad range of expertise in handling an array of project management tools as well as handling diverse teams to meet assorted objectives (Turner 2014, p. Gantt Chart for the Project A Gantt chart is a visual project management technique that is commonly used to present project information (Harrison and Lock 2017, 101). In presenting project information, a Gantt chart lists the phases or tasks of a project with their time of completion. Each task in a Gantt chart has a start date and an end date. The Gantt chart is a vital tool in project management because it helps project managers to plan, coordinate and track tasks pertaining to particular projects (Harrison and Lock 2017, 101). As such, if one activity in the critical path is delayed for two weeks, the entire project will be delayed for two weeks unless the activity following the delayed activity is completed two weeks earlier. Identifying a critical path is vital in the project management process. When a project manager identifies a critical path, he or she determines the areas of the project where effort cannot be compromised lest it delays the whole project. A change in any of the activities in the critical path affects the completion date of the entire project. ii. Enhances clarity A major benefit of the Gantt chart is its ability to break down multiple activities and timelines into a single document. This ability allows different stakeholders to easily track a project’s progress. iii. Facilitates effective management of resources Another benefit of using the Gantt charts is that they allow project managers to use resources in an effective and smart way. As such, some of the major elements to consider in determining the project’s success in the construction project are schedule, quality, cost, and stakeholder satisfaction (Larson and Gray 2015). It is therefore recommended to ensure that a construction project meets the required quality, is within the budget and time constraints, and satisfies all the stakeholders. Furthermore, the project management should apply the knowledge, skills, techniques, and tools necessary to meet project requirements.

Conclusion Constructing a building is a complex project with multiple tasks to be completed. The complexity of such a management project necessitates the application of appropriate project management tools to ensure smooth completion of the construction and the satisfaction of the project sponsors and end users.
