Television broadcasting in turkey: the audience of the television in turkey in the perspective of uses and gratification approach

Various shows are broadcasted but we fail to understand the most important habit of the audiences for their viewing purposes. The topic of this study involves the use of uses and gratification approach to determine why audiences watch the television in Turkey. The study is conducted on the perspective of the audiences to show their reasons for watching television. This paper aims at providing information that is well detailed about the turkey television industry from the audience’s perspective. The paper includes two parts; the first section involves a uses and gratification approach conceptual analysis. According uses and gratification approach audiences choose the kind of media they want based on its potential to satisfy their needs. The uses and gratification approach proves that individual are more interested in entertainment shows than informational TV shows.

The process of one entertaining himself or herself becomes easier than acquiring information as an outcome of communication technologies development, particularly since 1970s when developments began. Television has become a well known mass communication tool since 1930s when the television broadcast began. Currently, television is more than just a technological device. These researchers determined the motivations for watching television especially the health programs. They revealed four factors that influence the motivation of watching television. These factors include: obtaining information, habit, moral support or self awareness and individual utility. According to Kocer’s (2013) research about television viewing habits and motivations in the Kayseri city, he identified various factors that influence the viewing habits of the television according to the audiences. The most important factor is recreation and entertainment.

The participants were 700 in number and all the participants were graduates from a university in Istanbul. According to the statistics constitution of Turkey, the numbers of all the individuals’ who are graduates in Turkey consist of 15% of all the population in Turkey. While the population of university graduates in Istanbul consist of 15. 01% of all the population in Istanbul. The limitation involved in the study includes the age of 40 years old. The results show that the kinds of television shows that most participants like watching include: television series, followed by foreign movies then football and newscast of the prime time. The programs with the least viewer according to the participants include culture and art shows, cooking programs, magazines of the celebrity shows and the program that the participants don’t watch include the daytime women’s show.

The participants also reveal that they like to change the channel they are watching during advertisements or the time when they feel bored with the current channel that they are watching. The population of the university graduates in Turkey considers the television as an entertainment media. They reveal that they obtain a lot of information about the television programs through the use of social media or the use of internet. The researchers view each person who uses media as having different personalities with characteristics and needs that are different. With the perspective of audiences on the Turkey television, the implementation of uses and gratification is used to determine why people watch the television and the important television programs that the people like watching.

The participants involved in this study include a population of university graduates from Istanbul University in Turkey. The participant will be asked question regarding their perspective towards the Turkey television and identify their reasons for watching the television and what programs they like watching.
