This class also included the commanders. The next class was made of merchants and the least class was the laborers. Compare and contrast the ancient Sumerian and Egyptian societies in terms of Religion Feldt, L. Before kingship rule began in Mesopotamia, the society was led by theocratic priests as well as some religious leaders. This kind of rule was termed to be very good. However their role was taken over by the kings as rulers. The priests still maintained some kind of influence in that society. The Sumerians never regarded their king as a living god and never worshipped him.
