Essay on first world war
The ally’s side comprised of the Russia, Serbia, Italy, France, Britain and the US managed to join the allies later. The Allies fought against the Central Powers that included Bulgaria, Austria-Hungary, German as well as the Ottoman Empire. The Allies were later divided to include what was referred to as Affiliated Powers. The war started as a small conflict but later the war intensified and became a war that made the European empires to fight against each other. This was a war that was fought on a large geographical scale. The leaders of the fighting alliances considered large armies and heavy weapons to be key when it comes to winning the war. German had a plan to outdo both Russia and France and this resulted in the so-called arms race.
In this regard, complicated weapons like poisonous gas, machine guns, tanks and much more other were made (Robson, 23-29). The Europe continent was divided by the Alliances to create two rival groups. These groups were formed with the intention of having strong powers that could not be defeated by any nation. German wanted to first defeat France that supported Russia and then move on and concentrate on the other powerful enemy in the East part of Europe. In the boundary between German and France was heavily guarded. German attempted to attack France through the use of Belgium boundary. There was a severe fight between German and Belgium but Belgium could not manage to stop German from proceeding and British as well as French soldiers returned back. When the German soldiers were at the Marne they were confronted by the Allied Soldiers and they stopped.
Austria managed to attack Serbia several times but it was defeated and Russia captured a large part of Austria's territory. In addition, there was the Italian front and it comprised of Italy that was a member of the Triple Alliance. Italy saw no need of supporting Austria in 1914 because Austria had not been attacked by any enemy by then although it was one of the members of the “Triple Alliance”. There was a secret agreement that was made between Italy and the Allies. This agreement allowed Italy to possess Austrian territory if it managed to attack the Austria-Hungary. During WW1 weapons continued to be developed and by 1918 weapons of mass destruction were in existence. Some of the weapons were used in trench warfare. The most notable weapons during this period include the submarine, tank, and warplane.
The early years of the war did not have sophisticated weapons and the battles were ineffective because the militaries had not fully embraced the new technology. The armies in the final years managed to revolutionize the war by embracing new technology as well as employing new strategies. The British army proved to be highly skilled in this tactic of attack because they came up with highly sensitive listening gadgets that could indicate the sound of digging and as a result of avoiding the attack from explosives. In addition, the British army used to have heavy clothing during this war. Chemical weapons were also part of the war. The chemical weapons in this war included the mustard gas, tear gas and the phosgene. The Germans are the ones who had a wide knowledge of using chemical weapons at the start of the war because they had a well-developed chemical industry.
