Should the government therefore do more to control what people can access on the internet? Benefits of internet regulation by the government While the internet has made life easier and enjoyable, its uglier side is phenomenon. With large quantities of information available freely to everyone, internet theft and information, misuse is not new. People steal information and research, which do not belong to them and end up using them as their own. Government intervention in regulating the amount and the type of information we access from the internet is a bold and yet beneficial strategy. Some of the benefits accrued to government intervention include; Reduced Cyberbullying incidences Cyberbullying is not a new word in our technologically advanced era. When visiting pornographic sites, all one needs to do is lie about one’s age and access is granted.

With the access granted, they get to download, share and watch videos and harmful contents without parental guidance. This habit has been a trend especially among the young people (Kaess et al. Additionally, most youths take nude pictures of themselves and share within their peers via social media platforms. These images tend to circulate virally and at times damaging reputations. This has played a big deal in reducing terrorism activities in the country (History, 2006). Reduced addiction especially among the young people Internet is very addictive especially to the young generation. With the various social media platforms like instagram and Facebook offered free, our children on most occasions spend a lot of time on the internet. Despite the internet being distractive, most of the students easily neglect their studies just to surf on irrelevant materials.

Studies have revealed that almost 60% of internet users are addicted to the internet (Israelashvili, Kim, & Bukobza, 2012). Such interventions have resulted to the violation of freedoms of speech, rights to communication and the right to know. This is a violation of democracy. Additionally, the closure of websites and platforms where people express their thoughts and views is a big blow on internet development (DeNardis & Hackl, 2015). Notably, internet censorship by the government is an indirect abuse of power and democracy. The government may take advantage of their rights of censorship to filter out information that oppose their action and governance. In other words, citizens are arrested in some countries for criticizing the government. Such convictions are based on vague accusations. The judicial interpretation is not adequate.

The government has to much space to determine this issue. Thus, many scholars and lawyers submit a joint letter to limit or abolish this accusation. If this censorship will stop, a big difference will be noted in the economy. Business files will be downloaded and uploaded in matters of seconds, saving on time. Still on the economy, government regulations on the internet may end up affecting the growth of online services and markets. The internet itself has revolutionized trade. Most business transactions today depend entirely on the internet; booking of tickets, payment of taxes and online purchases and sales. Some governments have gone a step further by filtering some key words with an aim of and controlling what her citizens look for through the internet.

This impacts negatively to scholars, teachers and students (Elbahnasawy, 2014). Most government have implemented the use of various internet filters that help control access to various contents online. These filters classify word search as either blacklist or white list. Black list are the restricted searches while the white list are accessible without any restrictions. Great economic costs and slow internet connections are some of the negative attributes of internet censorship by the government. Additionally, the restrictive filters employed during censorships affect the scholars and teachers greatly.
