The concept of contextualism means that a structure (building) should have the rapport to its environmental context and draw from the character and the culture of the place. Before constructing a building an architect must survey the climate, wind, and site and soil conditions and factor them into the project as well. Originally, the dome of the cathedral was first designed by Arnolfo di Cambio but the architecture that later became famous for the designing and building the cathedral's dome was Filippo Brunelleschi (Burke, 2014). Brunelleschi’s important contribution to the Florence city and the field of architecture during his time was that he became the first to establish new standards in the field of architecture. At first was the problem of the space which was to be spanned. The space was too wide and therefore it was difficult to permit the traditional technique of wood centering to be part of the construction process. The walls that were buttressed had no capacity to hold the dome. Brunelleschi came with the plan which solved these problems in a unique way. Brunelleschi achievement was the fact that he freed the support of the cupola from the wall structure by making them separate frameworks which prepared the way for the 24 ribbed structure of the cathedral dome. Therefore, the strut supporting system of the cupola was now being transformed into the independent supporting skeleton of ribs. This Brunelleschi’s technique ended the medieval era of architecture where the monumental form of modern architecture was born (Coomans & Xu,2015) The modern architecture (Imperial Tower, India) Adrian Smith.
