Analysis of the Film In the Mood for Love
Suen, the Chan's landlady, Mr. Ho, Su Li-Zhen's employer, Mr. Koo, Chow Mo-Wan's landlord, Amah, the female servant, the man living in Mr. Koo's apartment called Joe Cheung, Mr. Chan and Mrs. Chow and Su find feel lonely despite the presence of landlady, Mrs. Suen. Their friendship develops since both suspect their spouses of infidelities. The film displays elements such as love, unfaithfulness, secrecy, loneliness, social class, the importance of women in the society and decolonization (Riley 10). Undeniably, the film “In the Mood for Love” manifests existence of love between characters. As mentioned earlier, in most cases, people find comfort and desire to get married to people they love. Therefore, couples signify love. Moreover, love is depicted when Mrs. Chan is bidding Mr. Chow bye as he leaves for Singapore for a new job offered.
This is eminent in the film, “In the Mood for Love”. Despite the fact that, the film's title may mean movie entails pure love, the author has succeeded in the use of irony. This is because the film is majorly established on infidelity. However, the lower class are the most isolated and access vulnerable to disease due to poor health, housing and education as well.
Chan is seen engaging himself in business trips. The couples are able to sustain themselves economically despite the fact that jobs have made them so busy. It is also because of social class that leads to meet of Mr. Chow and Mrs. Chan and offers her a job of assisting him in writing martial arts (Riley 23). Besides, Mrs. Chan is working as a secretary while Mrs. Chow works in a hotel. This implies that the perception towards women in the modern society is slowly changing despite being portrayed as weak characters in the film, women liberation movements have achieved increased in the rate of employment among females, especially in China (Christopher 40).
