This paper, however, will compare and contrast the underpinnings, skills, and interventions of cognitive-behavioral therapy and solution-focused brief therapy. Cognitive-behavioral therapy Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is a method of psychotherapeutic treatment that aids patients to be aware of the thought and feelings that influence how one behaves (Cherry, 2019). Another definition of CBT; it is a physiological treatment that focuses on the relationship between our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors ("Cognitive behavior therapy", n. d. CBT is used to tackle quite a number of psychological disorders such as fears (phobias), anxiety, addictions and depression among others. CBT concept is based on the fact that human thoughts and feeling plays a critical role in their behaviors. For instance, a person who fears scenes that are scary such as dead people or people doing scary things may find their selves avoiding watching horror or scary movies.

(Cherry, 2019). The main objective of CBT is to show clients that although they have no control everything around them, they can learn how to interpret and deal with things in their atmosphere. the benefits of CBT include, the therapies are very instructive, CBT practitioners teach their client rational self-counseling skills which makes them believe that they will continue doing well even after treatment. For most people avoid events that they fear, however, this maintains the feelings of fear and anxiety. When systematically subjected to their fears people master fear situations one by one and then they handle increasing exposure assignments. Exposure is one of the most CBT techniques used with a 90% success rate with some anxiety disorders. The third most used procedure is activity schedule to help people do things they do not regularly, by identifying and scheduling behaviors that might be of help to a person such as mediation, taking a walk, working on a task, it increases the chances of them being completed.

Scheduling is very beneficial to client who is not involved in rewarding activities due to depression and those unable to complete tasks because of procrastination. It can be used to treat people of all ages including children behavioral problems, family dysfunction, and domestic or child abuse, addiction and relationship issues. SFBT can be used to improve the quality of people with psychiatric disorders such as depression and anxiety (Caddel, 2018). SFBT is not based on any theory, it does not involve diagnosing mental sickness, solving problem or healing any sickness and it is not based on any concepts such as psychoanalytic theories. Milwaukee SFBT is a strength- form of psychotherapy. Psychotherapists from, Milwaukee, Steve De Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg developed the method, in the 1970s and 1980s.

For practitioners, they help clients to identify a period in their life when a present problem was either more detrimental or more manageable and evaluate the factors, which were not the same, or the solution that might have been there in the past. SFBT practitioners try to guide people in treatment via the process of recognizing, things working for them, help them explore the best way to continue using those strategies, and motivates them to embrace and celebrate success. The strategies used to help people in therapy are discussed in this section. The first strategy is the formula task that involves helping the patients the immediate focus on goal identification. Secondly is asking the miracle question, which is, suppose one night a miracle happened, and your problem was solved.

Thirdly, the techniques cannot be used to handle patients with serious mental issues. Finally, the technique does not create a client/therapist relationship deeper to be termed as therapeutic. SFBT and CBT: Similarities and Differences The similarities between SFBT and CBD is that they both talk tackle the issues on cognitions and behaviors. Secondly, both techniques can be believed since they do not aim at changing the personality of the client but they work on the present issues (SMOCK JORDAN, FROERER & BEAVIN BAVELAS, 2013). Thirdly, in both during the sessions the client are assigned homework, the practitioners use scaling questions in both techniques finally the method involves the setting of goals of the client. The key problem-solving method is finding a solution to the present challenges.

In contrast, solution building involves coming up with ideas of how the future will be better ignoring the current problems that might hinder the client from reaching their future goals. The solution approach involves the person in therapy being unique in everything to become more satisfied with their future outcomes. The main objective is not to solve the client problems but create the client desired future life despite any current difficult occurances. That is because their dreams, problem-solving and solution building have a huge difference. In-Depth: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
