This is why it is important for an individual to understand the various rates and types of development of a child. Physical While one expects a baby to go through rapid physical development between the age of one and five, it is during the first one year that the biggest changes happen. As a child learns to walk, climb and run, balance and improved strength of muscles mean that the child can is able to stand without support from a few minutes soon after they turn one year. This is the age when parents begin to be worried that their children are not growing especially for new parents. Communication At this age, most of the babies can use two or one words. Around a time like this, babies can also begin two put words together. Since understand develops faster that speech, a baby is in a position to follow some simple commands when they are one year of age (Trevarthen 65). There is a big difference in speech when children are between the age of two and three. The child also starts to recognize some words in favorite books. Emotional Development Children need a lot of affection and love for them to feel secure and happy through the stages of development.

At the age of one year, children develop a close attachment to their siblings, grandparents, and parents and even a trusted caretaker. at this age children struggle with anxiety especially since this is the time parents return to work or when a parent even leaves a room for some minutes. The anxiety of separation picks up as at one year and it is advisable that the child is provided with a lot of affection and attention till he adjusts (Trevarthen 8). They start to imagine the feelings of others. As a child starts to develop a stronger sense of self, the child will also start to need some privacy and more time alone (Trevarthen 15). This is when a child needs his own room or even a special corner to play and store toys.

Social Skills At the age of one year, the child becomes the happiest with the parents. The child may shy around strangers or just persons they are not well familiar with. At the age of three, the imagination of the child has greatly changed and this changes the way the child plays. At this age, a child enjoys pretense and even makes believe games. Children invent imaginary friends at this age. it is healthy and normal (Trevarthen 74). It is however good that a child gets several opportunities to play with friends. The child starts to show a preference for favorite things and games and has a specific manner of doing things. As a child approaches three years, he will know his full name.
