Code comfort article summary
A number of people other than the nursing staff who have for a long time handled palliative care patients will always offer immediate responses to a client in distress, provided the caretaker is sufficiently knowledgeable on the recommended actions (Fahlberg, 2015). Challenges occur in a health set up whereby when a patient is in distress, the nurse has to link up with the RT who would then offer assistance, all which may prolong a patient’s distress. This article summarizes the end-of-life care to a palliative patient who for years had been nursed by her elder sister. In the article, the elder sister expresses dissatisfaction at how the nurses respond to her brother’s aid during his last moments. Summary of The Article The article primarily addresses the rising concerns during the end-of-life care for terminally ill patients.
One of the challenges associated with end-life-care of terminally ill patients is that while they are at the hospital the procedures and protocol must be followed. As a result, instances of emergency may not be managed promptly enough. The patient’s sister despite being a nurse is not in a position to assist her brother, she feels the nurses are prolonging her brother's state of discomfort. Immediately her brother begins expressing a state of breathlessness, she calls a nurse who later takes some time then finally calls the RT (Fahlberg, 2015). All this process takes the staff 20 minutes, while she claims while taking care of her brother at home she would have availed the nebulizer treatments within two minutes. Also, it is important that nurses create a suitable timeline for providing care to distressing patients, this implies that nurses should be aware of when and how to administer nebulizers, analgesic or antiemetic.
They should also note the time duration, causes of delays and how to overcome the delays in order to avail timely treatment. Significantly, patients and families should be given a chance to manage the distressing symptom, this is because lack of control causes anxiety which worsens a state of distress particularly when the patient management is in the hospital. Incorporating the Interventions into Practice It is important to incorporate the evidence-based intervention into practice in order to achieve successful results during attempts to manage a patient in distress. One of the ways in which the interventions can be incorporated into practice is enlightening the overall nursing staff on the importance of adopting the evidenced-based interventions (Fahlberg, 2015). In this way, it becomes easier to know that the intervention that would be much beneficial.
Additionally, the outcome can be evaluated by creating a connection between the type of intervention offered and the response obtained from the patients. The results obtained may enable the nursing staff to draw a viable conclusion on the most preferable evidence-based intervention practices (Fahlberg, 2015). Also, nurses can make an observation and establish the interventions that when employed produces positive results, which would then be adopted. Another technique of evaluating the outcome of an intervention is asking family members what works best for their members who are ailing from terminal ailments Conclusion To conclude, terminally ill patients experience a lot of challenges ranging from psychologically to physically and as a result, it is important that people around them make them as comfortable as possible.
