DEFORESTATION IN THE AMAZON

Forests are a backbone of every life form to support biotic and genetic diversity. Forests influence climatic patterns and conditions and are of various economic importance to man’s existence. With the increasing world population, there has been increased demand for forests and its related products. This has been through deforestation which has come along with devastating effects on the climate which has affected the ecological existence of living things. Amazon is among the world’s prime rainforest being a habitat of very many species. The remaining deforestation in the Amazon is as a result of clearance of land by farmers for small-scale purposes and carry out subsistence agriculture for other crops. The fluctuating global prices on various trade commodities such as timber, beef, and other crops cultivated in the Amazon are just determinants of the future projected land use.

The forces of demand and supply of these products will have a significant effect on the projected land use of the forest land cover (Rodrigues, and Almeida, p. 89) Similarly, logging is another major contributor of deforestation in the Amazon forest. There are laws and regulations which allow cutting down of trees in the Amazon. However, through deforestation, carbon dioxide gas which had previously been stored in their leaves and trunks is then released to the atmosphere resulting to the accumulation greenhouse gases. When this happens in a particularly large portion of land space, carbon dioxide gas will no longer be absorbed. Climate change globally is brought about by the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the earth’s atmosphere. This affects ecological survival of living things through changes in weather patterns thereby increasing the prospects of natural disasters.

Deforestation in the Amazon has contributed to a larger percentage of this because of it being the largest rainforest. Projections are that if the rate of deforestation continues and is not controlled, the higher global temperature will melt the ozone layer (Shipley, p. The ice sheets store a lot of concealed bacteria, spreading diseases and hence causing new pandemics in the globe. The release of the ancient bacteria will lead to illnesses that Earth will not have the ability to handle. Some rays that Earth could be exposed to may cause different types of Cancer that might not be curable and will wipe out a lot of people. Global warming could also cause droughts which would even kill large masses of people.

Many animal species have been lost and become extinct and some remain to be endangered through the continued destruction of the Amazon forest. Ideally, Eco-forestry aims to restore forests to the acceptable standards where harvesting of some products may still be carried out for sustainability.
