Disability Equality in the UK

The most talked about forms of equality includes gender equality, racial and the equality of the disabled. Many groups also cover the topic encouraging people from all walks of life to embrace and promote the idea to reduce various social conflicts and or social disparities. Despite the much efforts put to ensure the realization of equality across the society, people will always cry foul on mistreatments and lack of equal rights and base their misfortunes on lack of fairness in the place where they are operating from. In the contemporary world, most governments in the world as well as other agencies such as the United Nations, and other non-governmental organizations have put considerable efforts to help in the realization of equality in various regions of the world.

It is believed that multiple forms of inequalities are among the significant factors derailing economic development since people lack fair chances hence deriving any given nation primary source of skilled labor for example. However, according to both the Equality and Human Rights Commission report and the Scope study, the disabled in the UK feel they are not treated with equality in by the rest of the community where only 42% of the total disabled population of around 14 million people (Booth), actually think that the country has done enough to ensure their welfare is looked into.

As high as 40% of the interviewed individuals in the country expressed their feeling of being worthless which rings an alarm bell on the status of equality of the disabled in the UK. What is more worrying in the country is the fact that these individuals even get bullied in public places (Booth). Surely egalitarianism theorists would not be pleased with the status of equality of the disabled in the US. 5% of the non-disabled (Johnston). This indicates that the UK is not a conducive environment where the disabled can thrive due to the high levels of discrimination directed towards them. On a financial basis, the report showed that the disabled youth aged between 16 years and 24 years and females living in the UK belongs to the lowest median hourly pay (Bulman).

This indicates that on top of opportunities being scarce for this group, they always get poor remuneration in comparison to the rest of the population in the UK. The commission’s report proved that less than half of the total disabled adult population (47. The policies that are available in the country does very little towards promoting the position of the disabled due to the simple fact that the government fails to enhance the implementation of these laws (Johnston). Any government can pass legislation regarding a given aspect, but not all administrations can implement and make follow up on the established regulations. Another fact regarding the US government and the rights of the disabled is that it has failed utterly to look into the welfare of these individuals. Over the years, there has been notion advanced by the British administration that the country leads the way concerning looking at the conditions and rights of the disabled. However, results from various groups such as the Equality and Human Rights Commissions points towards an entirely different point of view. The disabled in the UK are living in the worst conditions possible where they are bullied, denied equal opportunities to employment, access to social amenities. Besides, the disabled are more likely to go hungry in comparison to the rest of the population. Such statistics prove that the UK is many miles back in term of achieving equality for disabled and the information on the internet regarding how good the UK is doing in addressing the rights of the disabled is misinformed.
