Dred Scott Summary
Later in 1836, Emerson moved together with Scott to a fort in the Wisconsin Territory where Scott met and married a slave called Harriet Robinson whose ownership was afterwards transferred to Emerson. Scott never thought of seeking his freedom despite staying in the Free states, maybe because he was not aware of his rights or because he was contented with his master who was later transferred to Louisiana in the south where he died in 1843. After Emerson’s death, his widow hired Scott out to an army captain from where the resorted to seeking his and his wife’s freedom, first by offering to buy it at $300 from Mrs. Emerson who turned down his offer and then through a series of court cases from 1847 through 1856, most of which he lost due to failure to prove that he and Harriet were owned by Mrs.
