Oil emissions and dirty water from washing, flash toilets and showers in ships are a big problem to the business. These emissions are contaminating the oceans every day, risking the living things in the oceans. Drinkable water is becoming scarce as a result of water pollution. The liquid waste also impacts on other businesses such as fishing (Kelishadi, 2012). Soil contamination is a big concern to the company as it has a wide range of effects on the ecosystem. Use of fossil fuels by the company has a negative impact on the society at large (Kelishadi, 2012). One of the key stakeholders is the customers. The major customers of HAL are other industries and individuals who transfer large amounts of raw materials and finished goods. The current brand of customers is aware of the environmental issues initiated by companies and industries. Employees are very important in planning and execution of the plans to ensure environmental conservation. The company has a dedicated office for the conservation of the environment. The office, through the leadership of Bill Morani, is committed to improve the environmental welfare in various ways including the introduction of renewable sources of energy such as wind turbines. Ways in which HAL has Gone “Beyond Compliance” in its Environmental Initiatives HAL is one of the companies that are working towards achieving a sustainable environment for better operations of the company.

The company is taking initiative to introduce clean and renewable energy in its operations. The consultation effort is aimed at bringing together the best ways of creating an ecologically sustainable organisation. The company is current struggling with toxic emissions from burning fossil fuels and therefore, getting alternative clean and renewable energy will help the company to develop significantly (Reynolds, & Kandlikar, 2007). Consultation will bring about specialised skills and knowledge to help in achieving the current environmental conservation plans. Do you consider Holland America Line an ecologically sustainable organization? Why or why not? If not, then what additional steps would HAL need to take to become an ESO? Despite the fact that HAL is certified under ISO 14001 environmental standards, it is not yet an ecologically sustainable company.

One of the reasons is that it uses large quantities of fossil fuels to run its fleets of carriage vessels. There are several ways the company can adopt to achieve the status of an ecologically sustainable organisation. One of the ways is to engage all employees in the effort to achieve ecological sustainability. Employees play a very important role in the company’s various development agenda. In this case, employees should be sensitized on how to handle waste from their various departments. This will help the company to move forward in its effort to achieve sustainability. The company has been able to win a position as one of the leading sustainability organisations in the industry. This is very important for improving the image of the organisation.

The company has a dedicated office whose main aim is to help in realising ecological sustainability. One of the advantages of having the office is that it manages all affairs with regards to ecological sustainability. The office is an in-house effort to handle all issues surrounding environmental issues. Thus, it has to consult from other organisations, which is costly to the company. Recommended Actions to Morani with Respect to the Wind Turbine Initiative There are several actions that can work as regards the installation of the wind turbines on the decks of fleets. The company should seek for a reputable manufacturer of the turbine and ask for a customised turbine since it is one of the first installations around the world.

This is important to the company as it will avoid issues with low quality turbines; increasing the durability and reduce costs of maintenance. It would be necessary for Morani to look for experienced manufacturers who can showcase their accomplishments in the development of customisable wind turbines.
