They reflect the bad side of imperialism. This paper will analyse some examples. In that era, the Europeans are claiming to be civilizing the French. However, they are busy acquiring empires for their home governments. These empires were used as sources of raw materials and essential supplies. That is why Conrad refers Africa as a gloom to the west. Conrad asserts that, when Marlow encounters a debate in the ship, the man represented in the text extends his arm to the jungle in order to show darkness of its heart. These excerpts are classic reflection of Africa as the Dark Continent. In another dimension, the gloom to the west might also mean that Conrad is illuminating in the darkness, which is in every individual.
