As a Judge he had a reputation of being a no nonsense personality within the court of law. In fact this sternness was built upon his earlier passion of being a boxer before he pursued law as a career. His reputation made him acquire the nickname ‘Maximum John’. This was due to the fact that he was renowned for handing out the maximum sentence that was available within the regulations of the law for any particular offense. This trend made him not one of the most loved personalities in the world of court justice. In fact, the tale was twisted such that it seemed that the scandal was a scheme to tarnish the incumbent president’s reputation. Judge Sirica’s moment of truth, which did propagate his acknowledgement as TIME magazine’s man of the year was his constant badgering of the witnesses and ensuring that all defendants pleaded guilty to the charges and consequently provided adequate information to build a case against the White house and President Nixon (Perlstein).

Judge Sirica’s exceptional courage in propagating a wider scandal bore fruit with one of the defendants Mr. McCord providing a letter to the grand jury explaining how the defendants were pressurized to protect higher-ups who were part of the scandal. It was Judge Sirica’s persistence which ensured that the seating president deliver evidence to the special jury put in place to hear the case. In his tenure as president of Egypt, he was able to traverse to Israel and negotiate a peace treaty. This trip created a domino effect which promoted peace between the nations in the Arabian Peninsula. As an individual, Sadat was military minded. He served as vice president of Gamel Abdel Nasser whom was as assertive as he was against the Israel land challenges. Sadat took over as interim president after the death of Nasser.

To quite understand the importance of his journey to Israel, one needs to view the whole event from a different perspective. First and foremost this negotiation between Anwar Sadat and the Israeli Prime Minister, Menachem Begin was spearheaded by the leader of the free world at the time President Jimmy Carter. This alliance between Sadat and the Western states mitigated the impact of the Soviet Union in international affairs. Sadat did steer away from the Soviet Union’s influence which was against a peace understanding between Israel and the Arab states. The war for reclaiming parts of the Sinai Peninsula which was a matter of contention between the Arab states and Israel was mitigated. Sinai and Jerusalem afterwards. In the year 1977 the previous winner of the accolade was considered with Anwar Sadat.

President Jimmy Carter was a front runner to be the man of the year due to his impact in the Sadat-Begin negotiations.
