Document 1

It is estimated that the Monks Mound was constructed at around 900-995 CE by the Mississippians. The Monks Mound’s size is 100 feet high and 955 feet long. The region was home to about 15000 people and the pyramid was constructed at the center of all other surrounding structures. The towering large public building might have been used as a temple. Spiral Jetty is an earthwork structure sculptured by an American artist called Robert Smithson in 1970. These structures are considered as earthworks since they were built by humans. Although the Spiral Jetty was constructed just recently and the artist might have considered the modern scientific principles when constructing the sculpture, the constructors of Monk Mound might have also employed some engineering benchmarks during the course of construction.
