A nurse needs to understand what a patient knows about his health condition and the necessary lifestyle makeovers he is ready to change, problems to encounter to be able to identify the best way to motivate the patient. Advocacy in the care of patients is crucial and involves helping the families overcome the anxiety that they are facing, as a calm nurse. The nurse should demonstrate friendliness and care to the patient. There needs to be consistency in all that the nurse does and promises to the patient.

Lack of consistency diminishes trust as the patient is left confused about the nature of the nurse. Communication is of great importance to the nurse and the patient and also the family members. Nurses should be ready to serve patients when they seek assistance to access a facility, or they are hungry, in pain or have a barrier hindering their movement (Swisher, 2003). This helps in comforting the patients and giving them a feeling of love and ease. Portraying genuine interests towards patients is achieved when a nurse is open and honest with a display of congruence in behavior (Swisher, 2003). This is accomplished when the nurse ‘s actions rhyme with their words. From the information above, nursing can be defined as the process of delivering, educating and provision of healthcare to people for the well-being of their health and psychological support.
