Two key discoveries stand out. These are the existence of another life supporting planet and the use of hibernation in space travelers. This essay answers the question of the possibility of such scientific breakthroughs and discoveries. Besides, it provides the benefits of space exploration. This makes it difficult to carry more passengers and the journey becomes very expensive. For this reason, alternative methods such as having astronauts hibernate during the journey are being considered to make further Missions to Mars and other planets possible. This is a concept already used in Medical practice. It is known as therapeutic hypothermia and it is only limited to a few hours and on some extreme isolated events, human being has been put sleep for two weeks (De Deyne, 2010).

However, it is still under investigation for future use in space travel. For this reason, inspiration has been taken from the milestones achieved and much more advanced scientific study is being pursued by NASA and other firms in the space exploration industry to make a reality of science fiction concepts such as hibernation of astronauts as they travel in space as well as to discover a planet outside earth that would be able to support life. Therefore, this essay will provide more insights by answering the “is this even possible question?” about the real science and fiction concepts of hibernation of astronauts as well as the existence of another planet that supports life as expressed in the movie passengers. It will also provide on the benefits of space exploration and why it is necessary.

Summary of Passengers The movie presents two passengers who are on a journey to their new home known as a Homestead II. As they travel, on a journey that is supposed to take 120 years, they experience an untimely cut of their sleep 30 years into the journey when their ship malfunctions. In biology, hibernation is defined as a state of metabolic depression or inactivity that is used by animals to conserve energy during harsh weather conditions such as Winter (De Deyne, 2010). In space exploration, the term is used to refer to the state of putting a spaceship in a state of minimum power consumption. These definitions can directly be linked to hibernation or statis as depicted in Passengers. The medical field has used this science for many years now to help patients with traumatic illnesses recover from their pain.

The process involved is known as therapeutic hypothermia. Besides, it will be easier to protect the astronauts from space radiation since they would be travelling in small compartments fortified with radiation protection material. This will improve the safety of the astronauts during the space journey. These potential benefits fuel investigation on using hibernation in space travel and therefore, it could be a reality in the future (Bainbridge, 2009). Benefit of Investigation Of Hibernation: Is Space Exploration Necessary? The study on using hibernation on astronauts travelling in space is structured to leverage on an existing medical technology known as therapeutic hypothermia or temperature management. This technology is already in use for cardiac arrest patients and those with traumatic brain injuries. Kataria is a planetary scientist at NASA and her specialty is in studying the atmosphere of planets around other stars.

Planetary scientists have provided that planets akin to the earth are those that share the features of the earth such as being rocky as well as being positioned in the habitable zone of its parent star. This position allows for surface temperatures that support the existence of liquid water on that planet. This is an important requirement for the existence of any life form. However, a planet may have all these features but still not support life because of presence of runaway greenhouse effect such as Venus. Moreover, the possible existence of planets that support life has been supported by a recent discovery by NASA’s Kepler space telescope which identified four rocky alien planets orbiting the K2-72 which is positioned in the Aquarius constellation at about 181 light years from the earth (Wall, 2016).

Two of these planets shows signs of supporting life and are subject to further investigation. Even then these are just possibilities, there are no conformations. It is important to note that, Passengers is futurist movie that shows what science could be or achieve in the future. An example is the possibility of finding planets that could support life outside our universe. In addition, studying life outside of earth challenges our perspective of what life really is. Scientists have provided that while oxygen and other common biogases have made the principle indicators of the existence of life on earth, the condition might not be the same for the other planets (Sterzik, Bagnulo & Emde, 2014). There are great possibilities that oxygen might not be present in all these planets, yet alien life would be existing (Petigura, Howard & Marcy, 2013).

The diverse nature of the exoplanets discovered already might be a significant reinforcement that alien life could be very different from life in earth (Sterzik, Bagnulo & Emde, 2014). Considerations should be made on the possibilities of organisms that might be living on exo-earths whose atmosphere are dominated by molecular hydrogen instead of nitrogen and oxygen (Wall, 2015). Some of them are small but others have diameters of up-to 100 meters (Stuster, 2011). These pose huge danger and should be monitored to protect the inhabitants of the earth from possible danger. And, because of space exploration science and technology, instruments have been developed to predict the behavior of steroids and thus helps in taking necessary precaution (Stuster, 2011). b) It brings about great discoveries and inspires the young generation.
