J. was born with a condition of hard hearing which made him face a lot of challenges during his time in school. He also has a cerebral palsy condition which further worsens his situation. The condition has made him develop a serious problem of poor coordination. He was born in a family of two before his parents divorced. As a result, they have been able to communicate with each other using sign language. Although J. is hard of hearing, M. W is Deaf and thus the only way to communicate is through sign language. Having been raised in the United States, J. developed some social skills. He lives in a dormitory with other students in the school. This means that there is no constant contact with the family and especially the mother who has been there for him all the time.

In the same school is his close cousin M. W who they have been brought up together. When approaching a new group, the pressure on him is higher than when approaching an individual. He has been in the school for the Deaf for a long time and he is only a few months away from his graduation. However, he wants to improve his social skills when approaching new people and groups before his graduation in May. During the intervention, I advocated for the family to support J. improve his social interaction skills (PBCSSW1, PBCSSW8). It is a way of using Behavioral Intervention Plan (BIP) to help him develop social skills (C1: PBC2, C9: PBC15). To deal with the issue, data from the institution, his mother as well as other concerned parties can be used to assess his condition (C2:PBC3, PBCSSW9, PBCSWW10).

The main aim is to address the issue of shyness when meeting new people and groups. The idea is to develop a Behavioral Intervention Plan to help J. deal with his situation (C8: PBC13). The main idea is to take J. through sessions and then assignments whereby he will have to approach new people as well as groups (PBCSSW3). Process Recording Attached separately. Theoretical Practice Framework Theoretical framework to be used in J’s case aligns with my profession as a social worker. The theoretical framework brings together all the concepts needed in the case of J being shy when approaching new people and groups. As a result of his condition, he has lived with that character of feeling awkward when talking to new people.

It’s a social learning process as J. learns how to remain on his own not to be humiliated by other people. It’s the same social learning that can help him develop his social skills. Resilience Theory Resilience theory talks of how people overcome negative effects associated with risk exposure by successfully coping with the experiences associated with the risk factors. Overcoming these risk factors will be key to him developing social skills to socialize with strangers with feeling shy. Single System Design 1. Background of the Problem: Going out and meeting new people from different cultural backgrounds is essential in the psychological and cognitive development of the individual. Two literature reviews avail an evidence-based practice on the importance of meeting new people especially for a student who are introverts or have difficulties in confronting others.

According to Crisp meeting, new people present an individual with a whole new world full of opportunities (Crisp & Turner, 2009). In addition, social skill will help the student in learning social problem solving techniques and how to protect themselves from victimization. Research Question: Will behavior intervention plan increase James’s self-reported level of comfort in starting a conversation with a new person? 3. Type of Design: ABA 4. Method a. Participant: James is a 18 years-old African American male that has had fear of starting a conversation with a new person. In addition, the student will be able to contribute to class discussions which helps them to better understand certain topics which might prove to be difficult for some students. Student participation in class discussions and debate is beneficial in that it helps the student to develop effective skills in responding to questions.

Therefore, the school needs to incorporate this approach into the school programs to help students to develop both their academic and social life as they interact with students from different cultural backgrounds. The intervention should take into consideration the issues from numerous perspectives so as to address it in various levels. Being an introvert might affect the emotional development of an individual resulting in behavioral changes as one can become aggressive or temperamental in certain confrontations with students. A chance that his acquaintance is available, then it would be efficient to accompany him to increase accuracy levels of the process. Step 3: Begin by stating key steps of starting a conversation like greetings, using probing questions to prolong the conversation like what are they doing in the present situation or how they are doing? To put this into practice, the practitioner can begin to role play with the student on ways to start a conversation.

Then provide the student with an assignment to make new friends and try out this new tips on starting a conversation. Provide the student with rewards and incentives depending on the number of acquaintance he or she makes. Step 4: Evaluate the progress and review the set goals by asking the student how many acquaintance he or she was able to make after the treatment begun and compare with the number of acquaintance the student had before the assessment. DIANE Publishing. Discussion Questions 1). My research question is whether behavior intervention plan (BIP) will help increase J’s self-reported level of comfort when approaching new people. The research question was the background of my interaction with J. This was an attempt to make him gain confidence and become used to starting conversations with new people. -Other than my approach, are there other types of approach that can help J develop his social skills for starting conversations with new people and new groups? 3). Social workers are known for their social character. The profession teaches people how to interact with other people and help them solve their issue. As a social worker, one has to develop social skills as an important qualification of being a one.
