When citizens of these countries leave, they look for countries like Canada that are known to be stable and capable of offering a second chance to those who need it. Immigrants view Canada as a safe haven to their worries or aspirations. They move to Canada with the hope of turning around their lives that are somehow defined by unpleasantries. Different types of immigrants move to Canada on an annual basis. Based on the situation in their home countries, immigrants to Canada can be characterized as economic immigrants, family class, or refugees. These continents have countries that have seen deterioration of security in the past ten years. At first, immigrants who came from some of these regions were small in number and the government of Canada showed no haste in changing the policy.

In Syria, for instance, when the war began in 2011, it was presumed that normalcy would be restored after a short period of time. Fast forward, it is close to ten years since the war begun. As part of a group of countries that value and strive to fight for human rights, Canada purposed to change its immigration policy for the purpose of offering refuge to those who knocked on its door. The government, in changing this part of the immigration policy, was closing the door on considering a person’s health spending or social service when making decisions on whether the person could immigrate to Canada or not. As a result, this policy is set to affect a multitude of people or families that had plans to immigrate to Canada for better jobs, schools, and life in general.

At the beginning of 2019, the IRCC launched an interim route to permanent residency for caregivers. This is expected to run till mid-2019. Under this plan, caregivers who previously did not fit the description of old live-in caregivers are now given a chance to apply for permanent residence. In addition to having express entry programs, different provinces in Canada offer provincial nominee programs. This immigration streams help provinces select or accept immigrants based on their demographic and economic needs. Immigrants who meet the standards of these provinces are often fast tracked through the application process. When compared to the United States immigration policy, it is one of the strictest in the world. In the past, the U. on an annual basis, Canada accepts over 200,000 immigrants.

Under the new immigration policy, it is set to admit an extra 100,000 immigrants. In a span of three years (by 2021), Canada expects to admit over a million people (Citizenship Canada, 2018). The Canadian Government, in mid-2018, embarked on a campaign to educate the public about the advantages and importance of immigration. This came after the government had announced the plans to increase the number of admitted immigrants to over 300000 per annum. As a result, family units that were planning to immigrate to the U. S. were discouraged by this move. The United States also purposed to decrease the number of immigrants being admitted into the country. People who have been showing up at designated points of entry have been turned away. Despite their characterization, refugees are willing to move to Canada as it gives them a chance to flee war and empower themselves economically, even if it is earning low wages.

In contrast, the U. S. , in 2017, imposed a Travel Ban that aimed to bar people from certain countries from moving to the country (Heer, 2018). This was done in the name of protecting Americans from the threat of insecurity and mainly terrorism. At the moment, the U. S. government is planning on building a wall on its border with Mexico aimed at limiting the number of immigrants from South American countries. The immigration system of Canada aims at taking advantage of the economic opportunities that come with immigration. In light of this, as already highlighted, Canada looks at the value that immigrants bring to the country. Most of the people are agreeable to the idea of immigration. So long as people are capable of proving their worth to Canada in the application process, they can immigrate.

In the United States, however, the issue of immigration has become so polarizing. Politics has been used to push different divergent views on immigration and immigrants. At the moment, the United States is faced with a situation where one part of it is supportive of immigration while the other is against it (Grubel, 2009). This has increased productivity of Canadian firms that would be struggling if it were not for immigration. Collectively, Canada as a country is able to rely on immigrants for their economic input in growing the economy. Additionally, immigrants have been able to take jobs that most of the Canadians are not willing to do (Kaushik & Drolet, 2018). It is projected that immigration in Canada will account for 100% in population growth in the next two decades.

Most of the Canadian women are willing to have fewer or no children at all (Tani, 2019). Before the biometrics system of immigration application was put in place, refugees and other groups of immigrants did not undergo extreme checks and vetting processes. Upon settling in the country, there was no possible way of tracking specific immigrants once they settled in the country. Some were known to move to other places within Canada in search of better opportunities. When these refugees moved to Canada, terrorist groups like Al Qaeda and Islamic State would often send a few of their “members” to camouflage with those applying for immigration (Guerette, 2016). When these purported members of terrorist organizations settled in the country, they could then go ahead and make plans to attack Canadians as part of their agenda against Western countries.

Conclusion Canada’s immigration policy recently underwent changes aimed at accommodating more immigrants. Under the new policy, Canada is set to increase the number of admissions from 200000 to over 300000 annually and in the next three years, it is set to admit over a million people. The changes that were made to the Canadian immigration policy also include a new biometrics system that would enable all the immigrants and people seeking entry to the country provide their fingerprints and photos of their faces. The Canadian immigration policy is different when compared to that of the United States. Canada is more welcoming to immigrants while the U. H. , & Haider, A.
