One of such city which has integrated development strategies with sustainable goals is Sydney City in Australia. The management of Sydney City has liaised with other local and international organizations to ensure the development of the city aligns with ecological principles of sustainable development. The actions have improved social, economic, and environmental sustainability. The management of the city has also developed some guiding policies which are contained in a document called “sustainable Sydney 2030”. The document was developed by Lord Mayor Clover Moore in the year 2008. Planning, 2008). Such mechanisms are employed by the management of Sydney to ensure the city generates economic competitiveness edge in line with environmental sustainability. The essay will discuss how such approaches have been integrated by Sydney City management to ensure sustainable development of the city.

The historical development approaches used by Sydney city will be discussed to show the trends of the city towards sustainability. Various approaches such as economic competitiveness and environmental sustainability in Sydney will be integrated with sustainable development goals and strategies in the country. In view of that, the management of Sydney City has developed various strategies aimed at integrating economic development issues with sustainable development goals. The approaches include: Neoliberalist planning and development strategies in Sydney According to McGuirk O'Neill (2002), Since the 1980s, Sydney City management have engaged in neoliberal urbanization strategies which are aimed at enhancing Sydney as a global city and improving global competitiveness with other nations around the world. The study observed that the success of the developments in the city have been achieved through neoliberalist planning strategies through understanding and acknowledging the complex spatial effects of deeper global integration.

Such strategies have helped Sydney to develop itself in alignment with other cities around the world (McGuirk O'Neill, 2002). Neoliberalist planning approaches in Metro planning strategies In the 1970s, metropolitan planning and ecological development sustainability in Sydney city were subordinate to issues of economic development. Urban consolidation has also helped in reducing government expenditures and promotion of inter-region completion. The approach has also helped in the sustainable use of the land since housing density help in developing the available urban areas in the city as opposed to expanding development in suburban areas. Urban design planning tools A study conducted by Gunder (2011) observed that urban design tool is very effective in promoting the economic competitiveness of major global cities. The author asserted that urban design helps in promoting values and capital interests, and help in attracting middle and creative classes in the city (Gunder, 2011).

In realization of such attributes, Sydney City has evolved its urban planning strategies from traditional design agnosticism to modern design excellence. The management of Sydney city has acknowledged the primacy of environmental sustainability in guiding the vision, decisions, and strategic environmental directions. Environmental sustainable goals are linked with economic development goals in Sydney to help in increasing global competitiveness of the city. Sydney city acknowledges that development issues have led to environmental degradation in the country(Newman & Jennings, 2012). In view of that, Sydney city has developed a target that is aimed at reducing the emission of greenhouse gases to the environment by 50% by the year 2030 (Barone, 2008). Such approach would also help in promoting economic development in the city by developing new innovative ways that promote a green economy.

The vision also addresses social issues in the city by promoting equality measures in the city. Such measures help in sharing the wealth and natural resources of the country equitably to help poor individuals and families for sustainable growth and development. To reduce social distance in the city, the government has initiated measures aimed at promoting partnerships and wider engagement among various stakeholders in the country(Rasoolimanesh, Badarulzaman&Jaafar, 2011). Such approach has helped in promoting trust between individuals which help in promoting consumer behaviors in the city. By incorporating measures that address transport network and promote partnerships, Sydney city help in promoting sustainability through encouraging social inclusivity and engagements among various individuals in the city. The country should also help in funding technological innovation measures that focus on promoting resource and water efficiency, local food, energy, high-tech industries, and broadband communication.

Water wastage in the country Sydney city suffers from lack of proper management of water usage. Many residents overuse water in the city and they heavily rely on air conditioning in the city. Conservation and management of water measures are very important in Australia as the country is prone to water shortages and droughts. Sydney city, however, uses more water than any other city in Australia with 816,000 liters of water used by each individual every year. Destruction of habits causes environmental degradation by displacing various species that exist in such habitats(Floyd et al. To ensure environmental sustainability, recovery plan in the city and natural habitats environments should be developed and implemented to ensure the environment is conserved. The recovery plan should stipulate how such environments are going to be shielded from human encroachment to ensure species that reside in such environments are not displaced.

Such approach will help in providing important natural resources to the current and future generations leading to sustainable development. Conclusion The management of Sydney City has implemented different measures aimed at improving sustainability in the city. With cooperation and teamwork between the government, citizens, industries, non-governmental organizations, and various development sectors, such deficiencies can be addressed leading to a green economy for sustainable development. Ensuring sustainable development is the responsibility of all individuals in the society, thus, citizens should engage and implement green initiatives in their lives for sustainable future.
