The Main Events in the UK

Politics On the 10th of April,1998, a historical political agreement, the Good Friday Agreement was reached. The agreement included both a multiparty agreement where the parties involved included the Irish government, the government of the United Kingdom and the dominant political parties in Northern Ireland, and a British -Irish Agreement which was a bilateral international agreement (Morrissey & Smyth, 2002). The original signatories and ratifiers of the bilateral international agreement were the United Kingdom and and the Republic of Ireland. The agreement was to become effective a year later on the 2nd of December,1999 after being signed in Belfast,Northern Ireland. The Good Friday Agreement ,also referred to as the Belfast Agreement was an important development in the peace efforts in the setting of Northern Ireland.

Northern Ireland was thus recognized as being a territory within the United Kingdom. Nonetheless, the agreement included an exit clause for Northern Ireland -this includes the fact that if the majority of both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland wished for Northern Ireland to reclaim its autonomy, then the government of the United Kingdom and the Irish government were obliged to let Northern Ireland become sovereign. The Good Friday Agreement also compelled the British government repeal sections of its constitution that laid territorial claim over Northern Ireland,as did the Republic of Ireland. Movies On the 26th of January 1998, British soap for the first time included a transgender character, a first for the largely conservative country at the time (Whittle,2015).

Julie Hesmondhalgh played the character Hayley Patterson in Coronation Street. One of the highlights in the British music industry in this year was the emergence of the All Saints as a prominent act in the United Kingdom (Whiteley,2013). The group was also referred to as All Saints 1. 5 and originated in London. The group’s products included songs in electronica, R&B and pop. All Sainst was founded originally by members Simone Rainford, Shaznay Lewis and Melanie Blatt as an all-girl group. The song also managed to win two Brit Awards-which was first awarded on the 18th of October,1997 and is dedicated to recognizing excellence in British music. The song won Best British Video and Best British Single. Moreover, in November 1998, the group won the MTV Europe Music Award for Best Breakthrough Artist.

Their debut album was praised for its inclusion of contemporary dance trends-club and hip-hop rhythms. Some of the genres that inspired the group’s music included UK garage music, trip hop ,quiet storm and electronic among others. The race was set on a permanent racing facility- the Silverstone Circuit. The race thus covered Buckinghamshire, Northamptonshire and Silverstone areas of England. The circuit used then is owned by the British Racing Driver’s Club and has about i8 turns over a length of about 6 kilometres. The Grand Prix held in 1998 on the Silverstone circuit was a Formula One motor race and involved sixty laps. The winner in this particular race was Michael Schumacher, a Ferrari driver who had started the race from second position.

With an economic impact of about $ 60 million every year, the British grand Prix is not only responsible for injecting a lot of money into the British economy but also attracts a lot of visitors in terms of Formula One fans from all over the world which promotes cultural exchange (Fredline,2000). It is thus evident that 1998 was an important year regarding the film industry, sports, politics, music, literature and fashion trends.
