The state of the New York developed around 4000 miles of roads at the same time. Pennsylvania also built the Lancaster turnpike which was later extended to connect to Philadelphia and Pittsburg. The invention of steams boats revolutionized water transport. They were first used in 1826. Canals also provided faster and cheaper means of transport. The first commercial steam-powered train to be tested in America was in 1830 in Baltimore and Ohio railroads. Owing to its faster speed, individuals began constructing railroads, and by 1840, railroad mileage had surpassed canals. The development of transport systems immensely contributed to market revolution. The development enabled farmers to deliver their products to growing cities. The cost of business was also lowered. Canals eased transport. Before the canals, transporting a ton of wheat from western New York to Albany took 20 days and cost $ 100, but with the canal, it took ten days and cost just $ 5.
