EBP is different from research. The difference stems from the fact that evidence-based programs look at solving a problem by taking into consideration the expert opinions on methods of improvement, other forms of data and quality improvement data, and research findings. Initially, an evidence-based practice used to be referred to as the practice/research gap because it used to be a blank space between the practice and the conducting of any research. EBP differentiates from research because it helps nurses to identify the reasoning behind the processes and methods for a strategy for improvement. The contribution of EBP to nursing is numerous regarding improving the services the patients receive. Identification of the Nursing Concern to be Improved The nursing concern to be improved involves the reduction of widespread addiction and deaths due to overdosing on opioids.

The figures concerning the prescriptions in the United States written for opioids pain relievers has increased in recent years. For instance, in 2012, 259 million prescriptions were written for pain relievers with opioids as the primary component (Bao, et al. Consequentially, there was an increase in the complications resulting from opioid drug misuse and use. These complications were inclusive opioid withdrawals. PICOT Question In the adult population does the use of prescription drug monitoring programs (PDMP) by emergency department physician identify the potential risk of misuse/abuse of opioids for patients with acute pain versus not using PDMP? PICOT Table Example: P (Patient/Problem) Patient with opioid addiction I (Intervention/ indicator) Monitoring potential for opioid dependency C (Comparison) Not using prescription drug monitoring programs.

O (Outcome) Reduction in opioid-related overdose deaths T (Timing) Investigation and intervention within a six-month period Keywords used in the research: Opioids, drug prescription monitoring program, PDMP. The outcome expected from the intervention is going to be useful in the future practice setting by enabling the easy identification of potential drug misuse patients and consequentially contributing to the saving of more lives (Visentin & Hunt, 2017). The intervention will significantly result in the reduction of opioid-related overdose deaths. The efficiency is evident in the census that has been carried out to compare the impact of the intervention in states that have already implemented PDMP. The time frame regarding the interaction of the year of program implementation was tested to determine the implementation of the change program with time (Rutkow, Turner, Lucas, Hwang, & Alexander, 2015).

Theoretical Framework The theoretical framework that will suit this EBP involves the concept that is reducing opioid dependency and misuse that will lead to a significant decrease in the deaths from opioid overdose and even withdrawals. The initial phase of the analysis involved determining whether there is a connection between the reduction in the opioid-related overdose deaths and the implementation of the monitoring program (Patrick, Fry, Jones, & Buntin, 2016). A keen observation of the program implementation was carried out with time to determine any modification about the monitoring program. The next step involved the determination of whether specific program characteristics related to more significant changes about opioid-related overdose deaths as compared to other traits (Rutkow, Turner, Lucas, Hwang, & Alexander, 2015). , Pincus, H. , & Schackman, B.
