The recent impact of lower coal demand on the international waterborne export carriage of metallurgical coal
The fall has had multiple impacts on both the local and global scale as outlined in this paper. On the local level, the consequences include the emergence of new giants in the coal sector, endurance of high coal prices and uncertainty in the exports to other countries. The first impact is the emergence of new giants in the coal sector. They include Pakistan and Bangladesh. Pakistan, despite being endowed with vast coal reserves primarily in the Thar lignite field, faces an acute energy crisis that makes it rely on the exports from the US. Coal is too bulky, and it is for this reason that it is preferable to transport it via the sea. Going forward, the future of seaborne metallurgical coal is a bright one due to the increasing demand for steel globally.
