By virtue of its fast-paced nature in stabilizing patients that are critically injured or severely ill, highly effective nursing theories should be coupled with ER procedures to ensure the success of care scenarios. Peplau’s interpersonal theory stands out in this setting as it seeks to create a relationship between the nurse and patient (Senn, 2013). This relationship will allow both nurses and patients to communicate effectively, leading to an improvement in the quality of care offered to the patient. This essay will focus on Peplau’s Interpersonal Theory as an efficient nursing theory in the ER. Theory Description Purpose The purpose of this nursing theory is based on the foundation of nursing as a profession. For a nurse practicing this nursing theory, they are offered the ability to actively listen to their patient's concerns and experience through the care process.

In addition, these nurses are able to connect with their patients on an emotional level which makes the process of patient motivation highly effective. Relationship The relationship between the concepts presented under this nursing theory is entrenched in the values of an interpersonal relationship. These form of relationships build a sense of trust between two individuals. This trust provides the basis upon which the patient trusts the nurse and offers to collaborate in the recovery process. The theory was developed in 1952 after observation of the state of patients at asylums she worked at in the 1940s. As part of educating nurses, Peplau urged other nurses to use their daily environment as a means through which they could derive unique methods of promoting patient care.

Peplau’s early involvement in the nursing career exposed her to situations in which she was barred from communicating with patients (Senn, 2013). This experience led her to establish interpersonal relationships with patients by talking to them and observing the effect it had on patient care. Unique Focus The unique element of Peplau’s theory was the establishment of a relationship between a nurse and their patient. Additionally, the stage is significant in defining the type of relationship through the boundaries established by the nurse. The working phase includes the identification stage and the exploitation stage. This phase undertakes the process of influencing patient behavior. The identification stage involves processes where the nurse offers care and provides solutions to the health-related issues.

The exploitation phase takes advantage of the knowledge passed on from the nurse to the patient to transfer the power of care to the patient. In addition, it accurately highlights the roles of both parties, the boundaries that should guide the relationships and the expectations or outcomes that are expected at the end of the relationship. However, the disadvantages related to the theory have not been conclusively highlighted. Logical Congruence Due to its conclusiveness, the logical congruence of the theory is highlighted in its original proposition as well as through the research carried out on its effectiveness. The theory is presented in a systematic structure that allows nurses to internalize it and practice it during nursing operations. The phases and stages within the phases are also consistent throughout the theory as only a single version is presented.

The theory is a one-dimensional theory that is focused on improving the patient care process offered by nurses. The theory is aimed at promoting a change in patient behavior to influence them to take part in the care process. This theory has been described as the forward movement of human processes and personality (Hockenberry & Becker, 2016). The effectiveness of the theory has been attributed to by the research carried out over the years.
