These results are however underestimated as only 1 out of 24 cases are reported. This happens because most of the older people are afraid to report abuse case to close people around them. Another recent study of systematic reviews and meta-analyses suggested that there is a high number of elder abuse cases reported in institutions than in community settings. The worldwide population of older people above 60 years will probably be double from 900 million victims in 2015 to approximately 2 billion victims in 2050 as many are experiencing rapidly aging populations (Ho, 2017). Body Paragraphs Physical elder abuse is intentional use of force against an elderly person that leads to physical injuries and impairment. Adult protective services programs have reported that there is a rising number of elderly abuse caseloads reported over the previous five years from approximately 87% to 100%.

Another research conducted by long-term care Ombudsman programs reported that there are more than 20,000 complains of elderly physical abuse and neglect from the institution such as nursing homes and living facilities (Lee, 2018). Old people experiencing physical abuse have a greater risk of dying as compared to those who are not physically abused. Nursing and living facilities should ensure they support their staffs through training, adequate manpower, education and good wages in return of quality care to the old people. Sexual abuse is defined as any sexual act performed on an elder without consent. A torn or stained under wares. vi. Changes in behavior and attitudes Elderly women are the most vulnerable when it comes to sexual abuse as they are unable to protect themselves (Baker, 2017). Other old people who are at a higher risk of being sexually assaulted are patients who are suffering from dementia, Alzheimer and other types of memory disorders.

The abuser is very confident as he or she believes that the patient suffering from such memory illnesses will not be believed by anyone once the matter is reported. Shying iii. Seems confused or disturbed iv. Avoiding eye contact v. Low esteem vi. May engage in injurious behavior where he or she ends up hurting oneself or hurting others. Financial elder abuse is the improper use of a person’s money or valuables without permission (Wong, 2017). This may involve the removal of cash from a wallet, cheques or other tangible properties. Signs of financial abuse include; i. Forging the victim’s signature on other documents ii. Forcing the victim to sign a certain document like will or deed. to 5%. Conclusion Elder abuse is a rising issue in today’s society that is easily preventable.

As the population continues to age, more people will become dependent upon others for daily care and elder abuse will continue to rise. Nursing homes and other institution cares are leading with cases of inadequate handling of elderly abuse such as in sexual abuse which has 83% cases.
